The
German shepherd dog, or also incorrectly called the Alsatian, is a
remarkable breed. It is a service dog used the world over in the military,
for police work, guarding and protection work, search and rescue and of
course, for herding and companionship. He is versatile, faithful and
devoted, well balanced, when young may often be slightly difficult and shy,
but this disappears with training.
The
appearance of the gsd is readily recognized: typically wolf-like, quite
powerful and long in the body. The average height for males is 62.5 cm (25
in) and for females is 57.5 cm (23 in). The coat is of medium length,
straight hair, thick, close, rain-resistant, never short or long and the
undercoat thick. Coat coloration include black, black with tawny (tan) or
fawn markings, grey, grey and fawn, fawn, and even white (which is currently
not recognized by the AKC). The muzzle is fairly pointed, the head lean and
clean-cut and being quite broad between the ears. The muzzle is strong with
a scissor type bite and thin lips and the tip of the nose is black. The ears
are never docked, and stand erect, are medium sized and pointed. The eyes
are medium sized, almond shaped and quite dark in color. The chest is well
developed with good depth of the brisket; not too broad, with a long trunk
and belly slightly tucked up. The fore-legs are perfectly straight
when viewed from the front and the pasterns have a slight angle. The
hind quarters are markedly angled, with well turned stifles and the posture
is good.. The feet are short and the toes are curved. The tail is never
docked, and is well covered, reaching as far as the hock and sometimes
forming a slight curve at the tip. It hangs in a slight curve at rest and is
raised when moving but is never higher than horizontal. The German shepherd
is a past master at the trot while the motion travels gracefully from rear
to front.
